When I arrived Mortemor, Tempest, and Cwrw were playing babysitter to four of the young mages. They were arguing the semantics of a note which they passed back and forth.
The note was allegedly written by the Jester and contained both words and pictures to describe what was being asked.
One arrow head from each of the three cities bound to a shaft of wood from a tree - less than a year old. One sword made of the iron of a star.
After a little bickering of whether we should all go together or split up - Mortemor and Tempest left with two of the children.
Before they left they asked us to get the shafts. They would look for the arrowheads and the iron. For some reason Cwrw got it in his head that we needed to go to each of the three cities for the shaft so we headed out to Louisville.
The drive was relatively quiet - as quiet as it can get when you have two adolescents in the backseat. When we arrived we drove around for awhile until we found a tree nursery. We left the children in the car while we went in. The nursery was bought out of anything that fit the description, but Cwrw managed to milk the address to another nursery out of the clerk.
After that we drove out to the second nursery. We had no better luck that time. He asked the clerk if they had a phone book and called up a tree service business in Louisville.
Cwrw stopped at a liquor store on the way there. I stayed in the car with the children. He popped the trunk and put several cases of beer in it. Then we went to the tree service place that he had called.
The exact details escape me - mostly because I was anxious for something to happen... but we did the same thing in Lincoln. Ever since the brakes went out in my car I haven't been a big fan of driving.
Next, the children wanted to see the Consilium house. There, they picked apples and broke a branch from a tree.
After a short phone call we drove to Lincoln to meet the other group at Robber's Cave. We talked for a good couple of minutes about the cave as we headed into it, with Mortemor taking the lead. After awhile we stumbled across the corpse of an old soldier which drew pause and alarm. Something unsaid hung in the air and we all began looking in different directions.
There was a hole in the wall that caught my interest and I dug an arrowhead out of it. It seemed a little too convenient, but that's how these things go. Mortemor mentioned that he expected to find arrows down here. Everybody seemed to come up with 'something' that could work.
When the incident at the cave was finished with we ended up going to a field where a meteorite had hit - during the shower last month. The site had been picked clean.
While everybody moved towards a nearby farmhouse I had caught site of something or somebody watching us near the barn. When I approached there was a sword drawn on me and I was pulled out of sight from the others.
Ironstorm had not been to our sanctum in weeks and I was halfway surprised to see him there, but with as strange and circumstantial as the world has become it was only a passing thought. The strange and unusual are commonplace now, aren't they? He sheathed his sword only for a moment. Tempest and Cwrw were quick on my heels and they came up like a stampede behind us.
It came out that Ironstorm had gotten to the meteorite and had stashed it nearby, but not for the reason we had come for it. It was just circumstance.
Nothing ever works the way you want it to though. You never have enough time with the things you enjoy and the things you don't enjoy are brought up time and time again.
There was a long discussion about justice and hubris. Ironstorm set out tea for us while he spoke about his seclusion and the sense of peace he felt from being away from the other mages. The point was lost.
Ironstorm spent some time forging the meteor iron into a katana and he presented it to us. Cwrw took it in the name of the Consilium.
We were invited to stay... everybody else left as soon as they could excuse themselves. I'm not sure if I'm ever coming back.
