What do PETA, Animal Control and Poison Control have in common? Omaha, NE.
I finally went to the Omaha World Herald and got back issues from the paper for the last month after several people decided to bite my head off for not reading anything other than Dennis the Menace.
There is a new strain of rabies which has been running rampant.
I did a quick study of rabies by consulting www.google.com and came across this website.
www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies/Ques&Ans/q&a.htm#How%20can%20I%20protect%20my%20pet%20from%20rabies website.
The version of rabies that has run rampant around here is obviously of a different variety.
What we know about this strain that's different:
As a pharmacist I would like to recommend beginning on a vaccine.
If any one of us could get close enough to one of the original carriers or one of the infected we could with some scrutiny determine what causes the rabies. Then, perhaps with a combined effort we could come up with a vaccine.
After all, what good is a drug store if we play the role of animal control instead of medicine?
Other than that containment is what we need to focus on. If these animals are deliberately attacking canines in order to increase the number of infected we might have an epidemic soon.
If I am reading into this correctly the dogs have been attacking for a little over a month with between 10 and 15 attacks each week. For at least as far back as five weeks this has been a large problem.
Also, people seem to be taking this into their own hands as attacks -ON- local canines has increased. No doubt the education of potential rabies in their house pets is causing undo panic.

What we know about this strain that's different:
- Rabies are being spread only through canines.
- Some canines carry the rabies but do not spread it.
