VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Police were forced to shoot to kill Monday to stop a rampaging hare that bit an elderly woman, attacked her husband and then turned on officers answering the emergency call.
Austria's state broadcaster ORF reported that the hare bit the 74-year-old as she was hanging out washing in her garden, then attacked her husband. When officers in Linz, Austria's third-largest city, tried to stop it, it attacked them as well.
The unidentified woman was treated for a bite on her ankle at a hospital and then released, ORF said on its Web site. The carcass of the hare was being examined for rabies.
